Marie Auger holds a PhD in Contemporary Art History from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and conducts research on the materiality and circulation of photographic images, at the intersection of photography, contemporary art, and craft. Her research adopts an intermedial and transnational approach, considering the image as a versatile material shaped by technical, historical, and social processes.
She has taught for ten years at universities and art schools in France and Belgium, including Ghent University, Lille 3, and the Paris College of Art. She has received several grants and research awards, including a Fulbright fellowship in 2018–2019 and the Roederer Grant for Photography in 2022–2023, which supported a one-year fellowship at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. From 2024 to 2026, as part of a FED-tWIN position, she worked on the conservation and development of the photographic collections at the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels.
Drawing on her experience across research, teaching, and cultural institutions, she currently develops a practice of art criticism between France and Belgium, through written and oral contributions in both French and English. Her interests extend beyond photography to works that challenge the boundaries between media, techniques, and forms of craft and expertise, as well as the ways in which images circulate, are transformed, and transmitted.
